Education Library Service

The Education Library Service (ELS) offers a rich resource of books and other learning materials to support teachers across all key stages. Our collections reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of Southwark pupils. The wide range of resources supports breadth and balance in the curriculum, while specific resources are tailored to the National Curriculum and literacy/numeracy strategies.

Resources available for loan

  • 90,000 books
  • Dual and community language books
  • Group read and storytelling props
  • Big books
  • Story cassettes
  • Videos, DVDs and CD Roms
  • Resources specifically to support special educational needs
  • Photo packs with activity ideas
  • Information based and decorative posters and wall charts
  • Laminated maps
  • Photocopiable resources to support culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms (These can be purchased for a small charge)

Artefacts, multicultural musical instruments and costumes

These cover a diverse range of subject areas.  Many of the costumes are available in both child and adult sizes and cover historical periods from the Ancient Egyptians to the Victorians.  National dress costumes are also available.  The artefacts include:

  • Original and replica historical objects
  • Cultural artefacts and textiles from Africa, Asia and other parts of the world
  • Religious artefacts from all the world's major religious groups

Our resources can provide children with a whole new learning experience and help cater for their different learning needs. Contact with artefacts and costumes stimulates the imagination, challenges powers of observation, and encourages deduction and analysis.  It makes learning more fun too!

Borrowing

Subscribing teachers can borrow 40 items, including up to six non-book resources (such as wall charts, posters and videos). You can borrow in two ways.

  • Visit the library in person. A member of staff will assist you with your selection
  • Use our project loan request service. Let us know your requirements by post, fax, phone or email and professional librarians will select the most appropriate material for your needs

All loans can be delivered to, and collected from, your school.  Loans are usually for a term but can be exchanged at half term. You can monitor your loans through your borrower record, accessed via our online library catalogue.

Additional services

  • Advice on all aspects of library management and organisation
  • Advice, information and resource support for book weeks
