Home Improvement Agency (HIA)

Photo of an adapted bathroomThe Home Improvement Agency team offers a borough-wide service to elderly and disabled homeowners and private tenants who want to repair or adapt their homes. Our surveyors will take responsibility for the design, arranging for approved builders to provide estimates and supervising the building work on site.

Our financial counsellors support our clients through the renovation process, which can often be very stressful for elderly and disabled residents.

They also help clients raise the funds necessary to pay for the work. This includes applying for grants and loans, and maximising a client's income wherever possible by applying for state benefits that the client is entitled to.

If you are having difficulty managing around your home and think you may benefit from adaptations we can arrange for an independent occupational therapist to carry out an assessment of your needs.

If you have been assessed in the past by a social services occupational therapist and you think your needs have changed you should contact social services to request a re-assessment.

Small repairs scheme

The small repairs scheme is for homeowners and private tenants who wish to carry out one-off repairs that do not qualify for grant assistance. Although there is no grant help available if you are in receipt of a means tested benefit, you could be entitled to a contribution from our hardship fund towards the cost of work.
