Rights and Responsibilities
As a council tenant, you have signed a tenancy agreement with us as your landlord. This is a legal agreement, which both parties must keep to, and places important responsibilities on both of us. This page tells you about your rights and responsibilities as a council tenant.
The contents of this section of the tenants’ handbook is legally binding for the council.
Your rights
These are your rights. However, there may be some conditions that apply to them

As long as you follow the rules in your tenancy agreement, there is no reason why your tenancy cannot be for life

When you die, your partner, or other member of your family living with you, can inherit your tenancy

You can take in lodgers or sublet part of your home

Once you have our permission, you can carry out home improvements

You can buy your home

You can take part in managing your estate

Once you have our permission, you can exchange your home with another tenant

We must consult you on important housing management matters

We must give you information on how we manage your home
Your responsibilities
- You must keep to the rules of your tenancy agreement. You risk losing your home if you, or anyone else, break them
- You must pay your rent and other charges on time
- You must be a good neighbour
- You must look after your home
