Empty Properties and Second Homes
If your property is unoccupied you may be entitled to a reduction, this will depend on
- Why it is empty
- How long it has been empty for
- Whether furniture is left in the property
- The main residence of the liable person(s)
Empty properties
If the property is empty and unfurnished you may be able to claim an exemption for the first six months. If it remains empty after that time, you will be liable for full council tax unless the property fulfils the requirements of another category of exemption or discount.
Second homes
If the property is not your main residence you will be granted a 10% discount.
However, if your property is empty because you are required to live elsewhere for job-related purposes then you will be awarded a discount of 50%. (The accommodation must be provided by your employer). We will need to establish which property is your main residence and if you are not liable for council tax at both properties you may not qualify for this discount.
You will need to provide documentary evidence to support your claim and we will need to establish which property is your main residence. If you are not liable for council tax at both properties you may not qualify for this discount.
