Council TaxCouncil tax helps to pay for the essential services the council provides, such as
- Street cleansing
- Refuse collection
- Street lighting
- Education
- Social services
- The Police
- The Fire Service
- Flood defence
- The courts
Your council tax is based on the band of your property and the number of adult residents. An adult (for the purposes of council tax) is anyone over 18 years of age.
There is only one council tax bill per household whether it is owned, rented or empty. The Valuation Office Agency places each property in a property band and this dictates the amount payable.
Council tax came into effect on April 1 1993 and replaced the poll tax. All local councils collect council tax.
