A Better Service For Southwark's Pensioners
The complexity of the benefit system deters many people, especially the elderly, from claiming benefits to which they are entitled.
The results so far
We had aimed to raise £1m in extra income for our older residents, each year, but this target has been far exceeded. The work started in October 2004 and by the end of March 2007 we had already raised in excess of £8.2m.
The joint team
The team is a partnership between the pension service, which is part of the DWP, the council's housing and council tax benefit department, our service providers, Liberata and Vangent, and Southwark's Age Concern.
How can we help?
The team serves as a one stop service for elderly residents in relation to all benefits issues and possible issues beyond benefits such as community care services. Southwark's joint team can
- Carry out a full benefit check to ensure that you are receiving all of the money you are entitled to
- Check that you are receiving all of the relevant council tax reductions
- Provide advice on the services which are available. For example, you may be entitled to a disabled parking badge or they could refer you to a handy person service
- Complete all of the relevant forms for you and verify any necessary evidence
