Safety on Estates

Joint Security InitiativeTwo people and a computer

Joint Security Initiative (JSI) is a council funded scheme managed by the housing regeneration initiatives, delivering a range of community safety related services with priority given to council residents.

The JSI delivers services using local organisations and groups as providers. The range of issues that are being addressed by JSI funded schemes are

  • Personal safety
  • Burglary
  • Anti-social behaviour involving young people
  • Drugs misuse
  • Challenging racist and homophobic behaviour

Methods used include film making, education, recreation, personal development and activities with a focus on youth inclusion and active citizenship.

2008-09 funding

The JSI team received over 20 applications for funding in 2008-09. The funding has been awarded to 12 local organisations to provide services detailed in the bidding guidelines. There have been four new schemes awarded money for the first time.

What schemes will be delivered in 2008-09?

  • Bermondsey
    Service provider: Downside Fisher Youth Club
    Intensifying the existing outreach work and strengthening the newly formed Youth Panel. The club intends to facilitate and encourage physical activities, healthy lifestyles and active citizenship work.
  • Bermondsey
    Service provider: SASBU
    Tackling ongoing issues of residents’ dissatisfaction with the behaviour of young people on the estates and encourage team building, community spirit and cohesion.
  • Camberwell
    Service provider: Educational Alliance Africa (EAA) and Poet’s Corner Tenants and Residents’ Association
    Engaging young people in drama, educational visits and drama presentation as a diversionary programme to reduce drug misuse, antisocial behaviour and other unlawful activities within the estate.
  • Camberwell
    Service provider: East Dulwich Estate Tenants and Residents’ Association
    Providing a positive, stimulating and achievable programme of self development for young people in order to reduce their involvement in antisocial behaviour and encourage their involvement and inclusion in local communities.
  • Camberwell
    Service provider: Storymakers TV
    This scheme is a continuation of the successful work with residents of Wyndham and Comber estates to tackle antisocial behaviour through film making workshops.
  • Dulwich
    Service provider: Redthread in partnership with Croxted Road Tenants and Residents’ Association
    Health promotion workshops to address the use, misuse and abuse of drugs among young people.
  • Nunhead and Peckham Rye
    Service provider: Westminister House Youth Club
    Tackling anti-gang culture by shifting focus to notions of masculinity, offering various innovative diversionary activities and improving literacy skills.
  • Peckham
    Service provider: Southwark Youth Service
    Working to the Every Child Matters outcomes, the youth service will actively involve young people in the planning and delivery of activities, programmes and events associated with Ledbury.
  • Rotherhithe
    Service provider: Rotherhithe Angling Club
    Tackling antisocial behaviour of young people 8 to 16 years old. The project will offer an opportunity to take part in fishing activities over the summer holiday period.
  • Rotherhithe
    Service provider: Bede Youth Adventure Project
    Reducing crime and antisocial behaviour in the area by engaging young people in activities to positively influence their behaviour and improve relationship between them and the Tenants and Residents’ Association.
  • Walworth
    Service provider: Kickstart
    Two linked projects which will address the issues of young people's antisocial behaviour in identified hotspots and will seek to improve relationship and build trust between the younger and older members of the community.

Due to the popularity and demand the self defence and personal safety classes a further eight workshops will be offered free to residents and members of their households. Other JSI schemes

The JSI has also helped to establish some other schemes

  • Brandon Information Centre has been funded as a response to anti-social behaviour among young people, drug mis-use and burglary
  • Brimington Hub, which launched Radio Peckham  A woman in a recording studio
  • Leathermarket Cycle Project which offered free bicycle maintenance training to young people
  • Tabard Gardens scheme delivered gardening and art projects to increase cohesion amongst residents
