Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)CCTV can play a vital role in crime prevention and detection as well as raising public confidence and feelings of safety.

Southwark currently has 124 cameras covering Peckham Town Centre, Camberwell Town Centre, East Street, Southwark Park Road and the Elephant & Castle shopping centre and subways.
CCTV works best when it's part of a package of improvements in an area, for example, improving street lighting, redesigning areas to make it more difficult for crime to take place and community warden schemes.
CCTV procedure for the release of evidence
Under the terms of data protection legislation you have access to CCTV footage if you are the subject, providing
- The request is made in writing
- A specified fee is paid for each individual search
- The data controller is supplied with sufficient information to identify the person making the request
- The person making the request provides enough accurate information about the time, date and place so the data controller can locate the information the person seeks
- The person making the request will only be shown information relevant to that particular search and that contains personal footage of them only, unless all other individuals who may be identified from the same information have allowed the disclosure
- The data controller is entitled to refuse an individual request to view data under these provisions if insufficient or inaccurate information is provided. Every effort will be made to comply with subject access procedures and each request will be treated on its own merit
You will not be entitled to receive data that is being held for
- The prevention or detection of crime
- The apprehension or prosecution of offenders
- If giving you the information would be likely to prejudice any of these purposes
Process of disclosure
The data controller will
- Verify the accuracy of the request
- Replay the data to the requestor only, (or person acting on behalf of them)
- Make a copy of the material made if requested
The viewing will not take place in the control or monitoring area, but in a separate room. Only data that's specific to the search request shall be shown and it must not be possible to identify any other individuals from the information being shown. (Any such information will be blanked out, either by means of electronic screening or manual editing on the monitor screen).
