Versions of the Electoral Register

Make your mark logoThe electoral registration officer has two versions of the voters list

  • A full version
  • An edited version

What is the full register?

The full version lists everyone who is entitled to vote. The law states who can have a copy of it and what it can be used for. This includes

  • Electoral purposes
  • Prevention and the detection of crime
  • Checking a person's identity when applying for credit.

Who can see the full register?

It is a criminal offence for anyone who has access to the full register list to pass it on to anyone else or to use it for any other purpose.

Credit reference agencies are allowed within the law to purchase the electoral register to verify your address should you apply for credit.

What is the edited version?

The edited version is a duplication of the full list, the difference being names and addresses of people who have opted out are not included.

Who can see the edited version?

Private companies or individuals can buy the edited register from us.

How do I opt out?

If you do not want your details to appear on the edited register you must tell us. You can do this by ticking the opt-out boxes on the registration forms.

The law

There are two pieces of legislation that provide information about the full and edited registers.
