The Mayor of Southwark

Councillor Eliza Mann was appointed as The Mayor of Southwark on May 21 2008. Southwark Mayor Eliza Mann

Role of the mayor

The Mayor is elected to serve for twelve months by a special council assembly called Mayor Making held in May.

The Mayor upholds and promotes the purposes of the constitution.

The Mayor chairs the meetings of the council assembly so its business can be carried out efficiently with regard to the rights of all councillors and the interests of the community.

As first citizen of the borough the Mayor will represent Southwark at hundreds of civic, ceremonial and social engagements throughout the year including Southwark Civic Awards. The Mayor also promotes public involvement in the council's activities and attends civic and ceremonial functions.

The Deputy Mayor

Councillor Denise Capstick was appointed Deputy Mayor. The Deputy Mayor undertakes all the Mayor's functions if for some reason the mayor is not available.

The Mayor's Charity

Apart from promoting the common good of all the people who live and work in Southwark, The Mayor traditionally uses their term of office to raise funds for a charitable cause that reflects their personal interests. The Mayor is also a patron of The Common Good Trust.

This year the Mayor's particular area of interest is diabetes. The Mayor has therefore chosen to support Diabetes UK to raise awareness and promote the importance of early diagnosis. The Mayor wants to raise funds for a mobile diagnosis unit that can vist events and tour around providing  voluntary and free blood tests to test for the early onset of diabetes.
