Residents survey 2006

Southwark is a borough with one of the highest levels of cultural diversity in the country, but also one of the highest levels of community cohesion.

The survey shows that 86 per cent of residents agree that people from different backgrounds get on well together, up 12per cent compared to 2004. In 2006, 83 per cent said Southwark is a place where people respect ethnic differences, up 12per cent from 2004.

The findings show that satisfaction with

  • Recycling facilities
  • Street lighting
  • Sports and leisure facilities

are especially positive with a high level of very satisfied residents.

Satisfaction with the council has risen from 57 per cent in 2000 to 65 per cent in 2006. Seventy-six per cent of residents are satisfied with the area as a place to live.

The residents survey was conducted with over 1,000 Southwark residents across the borough. All of the interviews were conducted face-to-face in residents' homes.

The results cover

  • All council-delivered services
  • Community safety
  • Communications
