The Big Switch Off

The Big Switch Off - Save energy, save money

As part of the local government performance framework, DEFRA have set up a number of National Indicators for local authorities. The borough must reduce carbon emissions by 8.5% by 2011.

Residents

Save money by saving energy at home

Making small changes to the way you use energy can make your home warmer, more efficient and save you money.

We've created a 'virtual home' which shows you the many ways you can save energy, and how much money each of these could save you over one year.

Energy saving in your homeHere's some examples:

  • Just one energy efficient bulb lasts ten times longer and can save you up to £60 over its lifetime.

  • Turning the thermostat down by 1°C could save up to £60 per household per year.

  • Switching off your TV and computer instead of leaving them on standby could save you around £30 per year.

These are just little savings but they do add up, in fact if every household in Southwark turned their heating down by 1°C, the saving would be £6.8m across the borough.

One small change today means a big difference in cost over the year so don’t waste money - Join the Big Switch Off.

The Big Switch Off - Your e-mission

Large organisations

This refers to large emitting commercial and public organisations. 81% of Southwark’s emissions come from the built environment, or Southwark’s 120,000 homes, businesses, and public sector buildings, including council and school buildings.

Large emitters will be invited to join The 200 Club - a network which will provide ongoing support and advice.

Small to medium enterprises

In today's competitive business environment, successful businesses are those making efficient use of energy and resources - driving their costs down.

We provide free support, resources and advice to businesses who are making a commitment to improving their environmental performance and tackling climate change. Environmental Business Awards will be given to businesses that achieve high standards of environmental sustainability and knowledge sharing. Winners will be promoted and receive a certificate and window sticker that can be displayed on the premises.

We send a monthly e-newsletter with news and advice for businesses in Southwark. Anyone can sign up to receive it.

Schools

The Government wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. Southwark Council has pledged that all schools in the borough will be Eco-Schools by 2010.

The Sustainable Services Team provide information, resources and support to help Southwark schools provide the best possible environmental education. You can also sign up to receive the monthly e-bulletin for schools.
