EqualitiesWelcome to Equalities at Southwark Council
Southwark benefits from being one of the most diverse boroughs in the UK. Within our schools there are over 100 languages spoken. Black and Minority Ethnic businesses make a major contribution to the borough’s economy and to the economy of London. Southwark is also proud to be the home to a large lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population.
In responding to the 2006 Southwark residents' survey, 86 percent of people polled agreed with the statement that people from different backgrounds get on well together.
Diverse workforce
Southwark's diversity creates a resilience and ability to respond to change. The council also benefits from having a diverse workforce, as our staff bring a wealth of experiences to the borough's work. In 2006 to 2007, 45.5 percent of the counil's workforce identified themselves as black or minority ethnic groups.
For the council, our challenge is to see how we can make Southwark a place where communities and individuals can thrive and achieve their maximum potential.
In this section we set out Southwark's vision for equalities and provide details of how we are putting our policies into practice. You can also catch up on recent news and developments in our current issues section.
