Your council is answerable to you the local resident and service user. In these pages you can find out how the democratic side of the council works and how decisions that directly affect you are made.
Every four years local council borough elections are held in Southwark. In these elections you can use your vote to decide who represents you on the council and can make decisions on your behalf.
Southwark council has 63 councillors. The councillors represent 21 wards and there are three councillors in each ward. The last borough elections took place in May 2006.

The London Borough of Southwark has agreed a constitution. The constitution sets out how the Council operates, how decisions are made and the procedures that are followed to ensure that these are efficient, transparent and accountable to local people.
The constitution commits the council to clear, transparent and accountable decision-making, which is inclusive and provides opportunity for community involvement whilst ensuring effective and efficient use of resources.
