About the Council

Southwark is a borough with a proud history and an exciting future as a world class quarter of a world class city. For years Southwark has been a hub for innovation and creativity and at the same time the spirit within our communities has remained strong and cohesive.

The way the council operates and makes decisions is set out in our constitution which describes the rights and duties of both councillors and citizens. It also includes the rules covering our contractual and financial procedures as well as our codes of conduct, all of which help to make our processes transparent and accountable.

The delivery of quality public services is one of the council's key objectives and its ability to achieve this is underpinned by

  • Sound budgetary performance, supported by regular monitoring and reporting to councillors
  • Healthy levels of reserves and balances, as required by our medium term financial strategy
  • financial and regulatory support from the UK government
  • Unqualified audit opinion, see our latest statement of accounts
  • Financial flexibility, the council has wide ranging powers to borrow and lenders are protected under the Local Government Act 2003

The council's community strategy, Southwark 2016 sets out our long term vision for improving outcomes for people, places and delivering quality services. The achievement of these is underpinned by our ten year programme of capital investment.

In the medium term, the council's corporate plan for 2007 to 2011 and medium term financial strategy, explain what the council is planning to do with the finances available to support its 2016 vision and how we intend to track our progress.

Southwark is an exciting place to live, learn, visit or do business in.  We have set ourselves ambitious plans and our success in delivering these will shape the long term future of the people of Southwark.
