victim support talking to Rotherhithe womenAs at the 2001 Census the population of Rotherhithe was 35,843. By 2006 this population was expected to increase by 6% to 37,984. This is the same as the expected overall population increase for Southwark (6%).

Who lives in Rotherhithe?

Rotherhithe Community Council area has a higher proportion of people aged 20 to 34 years compared to Southwark as a whole. Just over 70% of the population in Rotherhithe is of working age (aged 16 to 64) and only 9% are aged over 65 years. Rotherhithe has a low proportion of people aged 0 to 15 compared to all the other Community Council areas and a slightly lower proportion of older people (aged over 65 years).

Three quarters of people in the area are White British. This is higher than for Southwark as a whole and the second highest of all the other Community Council areas. Rotherhithe has the second lowest proportion of people from Black ethnic groups and lowest proportion of people of Mixed ethnicity. This includes the lowest proportion of people of Black Caribbean ethnicity and Other Black ethnic groups.

Where were they born?

Slightly less than three quarters of people in Rotherhithe were born in England. This is higher than for Southwark as a whole and the second highest proportion of all the other Community Council areas. Two thirds of people in Rotherhithe are Christians. This is higher than Southwark as a whole and the highest proportion of all the other Community Council areas. It has the second lowest proportion of Muslims compared to the other Community Council areas.

What jobs do they do?

Rotherhithe has the second highest proportion of people in the following occupations: managers and senior officials, professional and administrative and secretarial. It has the lowest proportion of people working in personal services occupations compared to all the other Community Council areas.

Life expectancy

Within the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe locality, male life expectancy at birth rangeschildren in lantern parade, Bermondsey and Rotherhithe
between 71 years in Livesey ward to 75.6 years in Riverside ward, with the exception
of Surrey Docks, which has a much higher expectancy at 89.8 years. Rotherhithe and Livesey wards have lower life expectancy than Southwark (74.1), London (76.1) and England (76.3).Female life expectancy at birth in Bermondsey & Rotherhithe follows a similar pattern, with Surrey Docks having a higher life expectancy than the other wards within the locality at 85 years. Grange ward has the lowest life expectancy at 77.8 years. The other wards within the locality are similar to the Southwark (80.2), London (80.9) and England (80.8) averages (Source: London Health Observatory).
