The Strongest Local Communities

Local people have said that Nunhead and Peckham Rye's strong sense of identity and community is one of its greatest assets. There are many local people and community and faith organisations that are actively involved in making their neighbourhood a better place. We aim to widen the number of people, especially young people, involved in community affairs as well as make the council and its partners more responsive to them when they do get involved.

Community Councils

Nunhead and Peckham Rye Community Council is at the heart of local democracy and is supported by the Peckham Programme Team. Themed meetings, for example looking at health provision, community safety issues and facilities for young people are attracting more people. Plus there are regular 'community slots' where local people and organisations present the work they are doing within the local community. Community Councils are also directly responsible for allocating Cleaner, Greener, Safer and Community Council fund money for community projects.

Our pilot ran from July to December 2007 and was a way of helping people who want to become active citizens. People often find there are too many hurdles to getting simple projects off the ground. So far this year we've helped some 20 projects including enabling local residents open up a disused room in a school for community use, getting a sheltered housing unit online and sorting out sports kit for local teams of youngsters. If you live in SE15 and have an idea for a local project in 2008 contact 020 7525 1002.

Community and voluntary sector

There are over 150 local community and voluntary sector organisations in the wider Peckham area. Some, such as the Peckham Settlement, have roots as far back as the beginning of the century while others have only been existence for less than a year. What brings theme together is their passion and desire to improve Peckham. We help them to be more effective through longer term business planning, drawing up documents such as constitutions and fundraising for beyond council grants.  Contact Peckham Voluntary Sector Forum on 020 7358 9777.

Working together

We work jointly with residents on all types of issues. The Rye Lane and Station Action Group, consisting of residents and council officers, does exactly what it says on the tin. So far this fruitful alliance has sorted out the cleaning contract at the station forecourt and started restoration work to the listed station building. To get involved contact Liza Morshead on 020 7525 1018.

Our young people are already involved in intergenerational work, with academy hairdressing students providing salon treatments for older residents and others hosting parties. These activities have been so successful that more are planned for 2008

We run some community centres, which have a mixture of rooms for hire for community activities. For more details contact Gareth Rees on 020 7525 1012.
