Challenges for Nunhead and Peckham Rye Nunhead and Peckham Rye suffers from multiple deprivation. The statistics bear this out, for example low educational achievement, the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the borough, the highest proportion of long term chronic illness.
A major challenge is to prevent young people from becoming victims or perpetrators of crime. Some Peckham organisations are at the cutting edge of youth work.
From Boyhood to Manhood won the only non music Mobo award in 2007 for its work with young people. This work supports the community safety family such as the police and wardens in reducing crime and fear of crime and to tackle antisocial behaviour.
Youth activities for Nunhead and Peckham Rye
Peckham Programme has refurbished or built new youth facilities in SE15 such as Central Venture Park, Spark at Brimmington Park and the BMX track at Bird in Bush. We have supported Westminster Youth Club's anti-gang initiative and the new adventure playground being built on Peckham Rye. Local people had a skate jam event at the Rye and are fundraising for a mini ramp.
One of our aims is to provide activities that support the aspiration of our young people. Peckham Programme's highly popular Star Academy is more than just an annual talent show. The BBC, Sky TV and local colleges all take stalls at the event to promote a variety of careers in the media to young people in Nunhead and Peckham.
This year more than 2,000 attended the third Star Academy to watch the 22 top local acts that had made it through the gruelling audition stage. We are planning Star Academy four. So if you are in your teens, live in Peckham, can sing, dance, rap or just want to be in the audience watch out for local publicity or contact Peckham Programme.
