Looking After Camberwell

There are many agencies involved in looking after Camberwell's outdoor environment and keeping it safe.

Cleaner Greener Safer Daneville Road cleaner greener safer scheme

The Council provides funding every year to help make residents' ideas for how their neighbourhoods can become cleaner, greener and safer a reality. These ideas can range from new lighting, to playgrounds and facilities for young people, to tree planting and landscaping. Further information on the Cleaner, Greener, Safer fund

Visual audits

Every month a visual audit takes place in Camberwell. Visual audits are walkabouts of an area, looking at problems in the physical environment such as graffiti, fly-tipping, abandoned cars and damage to trees. After the audit the findings are passed on to the relevant council departments so that they can respond.

Local residents are very welcome to take part in the audits, as your knowledge of your area is invaluable. Ward councillors and council staff also take part.

The audits take place on the last Wednesday of each month and start at 10am, finishing by 12pm. If you would like to take part in an audit, please contact Katherine Pitt on 020 7525 6433 or email Katherine.Pitt@southwark.gov.uk . Camberwell visual audit schedule for 2008 (doc 28kb)

Safer Neighbourhood Police Teams

Safer Neighbourhoods is about local policing; police and partners working with local residents, to identify and tackle issues of concern in your neighbourhood.

There are three Safer Neighbourhoods police teams in Camberwell – one in each electoral ward. Each team is normally made up of six police and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). Their aim is to listen and talk to you, and find out what affects your daily life and feelings of security. These might be issues such as anti-social behaviour, graffiti, noisy neighbours, yobs or vandalism. Then, they work in partnership with you and other agencies to find a lasting solution.

The teams are permanent and police officers will not be redeployed to other areas except in extreme catastrophic or terrorist-related events. They are provided in addition to London’s other policing teams and specialist units.

See the Safer Neighbourhoods website for further information.

Please note – in an emergency always call 999.

Camberwell Community Wardens Camberwell Community Wardens

The Camberwell Community wardens provide a highly visible, reassuring presence that can deter crime and anti-social behaviour. A large part of the community wardens' role is to help address environmental concerns by identifying and reporting litter, graffiti, fly-tipping and abandoned vehicles to the council's environmental services team. The community wardens monitor street and estate cleaning which helps improve the appearance of the area and helps to discourage further crime and anti-social behaviour.

In the second half of 2007 the Camberwell Wardens involvement in high profile cross border enforcement operations has lead to a decrease in anti social behaviour around the Lambeth border.

The Camberwell Wardens are working frequently with vulnerable residents including rough sleepers, the elderly and young people, working in partnership with police, partners and agencies to deal with the issues that affect the community directly.

The team have been pro-active with the young people in the area, engaging them in activitites to empower them to make the right choices and take the right path in life. The wardens have been working closely with youth workers and youth clubs, particpating in sporting activities on estates.

You can contact Camberwell wardens on 020 7525 0691.
