Enterprising Camberwell

P2 Cuts hairdressers

'Camberwell Green will continue to be a lively centre that services the local and wider community and provides a range of retail services, some specialist shopping opportunities, community facilities and a wider source of local employment. Its function and role are unlikely to change ensuring that it remains a lively and vital mixed-use location serving a local catchment.' (The Southwark Plan, 2002).

Camberwell town centre is a place of opportunity for small businesses, being

  • The local focus for around 30,000 people who live within ten minutes’ walk
  • The base for several major employers including Kings College and the Maudsley hospitals Camberwell College of Arts and Southwark Council
  • A major transport junction, with a massive 36,000 people using buses every 12 hours period – thus high potential footfall. There are good links to the City of London, West End, Victoria and Vauxhall
  • Butterfly Walk shopping centre, located on Denmark Hill, is a single storey 1970s building which accommodates one large supermarket and several small retail units
  • Camberwell comes alive at night as people head for its many restaurants, gastropubs and bars
  • An arts and crafts market for Camberwell is being planned

Business support and advice

The SE5 Forum for Camberwell manages the Camberwell Traders’ Association, which aims to create a unified voice for local traders and represent their interests to the various local authorities.

GLEOneLondon is a not for profit organisation that provides free support to those thinking of setting up their own business and to those who have already started trading.

Southwark business desk provides an information and referral service.

Although opportunities for major development are limited, there are prospects for a revamped Butterfly Walk; many new bars and cafés have opened over the last few years; and there is the prospect of further renewal prompted by the local creative industries.
