Young people in fine voice at The Mix festivalSouthwark reverberated with the sound of 5000 partying people on Sunday (August 17), as youth festival The Mix was launched.
Run by youth-led community organisations alongside Southwark Council, The Mix was created to showcase the work of young people.
Throughout the festival, more than 40 young people helped produce and stage-manage everything from fashions shows to radio programmes to live bands. Indeed, some 80 performances rocked the festival, including shows by young people and festival headline act Sway.
In The Mix media tent, more than 200 Southwark young people had the opportunity to talk about the issues affecting their lives through vox pops and interviews, and South City Radio was also on-hand to broadcast the thoughts of young people to a wider audience.
Other festival focal points included ‘FutureMix’, which provided advice on careers, activities and social enterprise; ‘CineMix’, which featured short films; ‘GetFitMix’, which offered sports activities from sumo wrestling to a skate park; and the Key 2 Life tent, which distributed fashion, health and beauty information under the management of the young people’s steering group.
The festival was kicked off in style at midday, with a carnival-style parade of more than 100 people from Bellenden Old School to the festival venue at Burgess Park.
