Launch of y-volunteer in Southwark Young people in Southwark have clocked up nearly 58,000 hours of voluntary work in the past five years. Last week the y-volunteer programme in Southwark was relaunched.
About the y-volunteer programme
We support and advise 16 to 25 year olds to volunteer in the community. Six hundred certificates have been issued to young people since 2003 to recognise the number of hours they have dedicated to voluntary work. This also includes 13 certificates for the under 16s.
A fantastic opportunity
Becoming a volunteer is a great way to learn new skills, meet new people and help develop your career and build your CV. Whatever your interests, there's an opportunity suitable for you. It is also possible for you to create your own project. Volunteering is a rewarding experience where you have the chance to be your own boss and see your ideas come to life.
Learning new skills
Jake, aged 16, received a 200 hour certificate for his hard work helping to turn around the IT system at the Copleston Centre, a community centre running a variety of activities for all ages including outreach work for adults with mental health problems.
Jake said: "I was able to gain a huge understanding in how IT is used in an office environment. I used my computer skills and developed them to make sure I knew what needed to be done to sort out problems and make new things work."
Launch of y-volunteer
The new y-volunteer youth project kicked off with a launch party to recognise all the positive work done over the past nine years from nearly 600 young volunteers in Southwark. Young people helped organise and audition acts for the launch which was hosted by award winning stand up comedian, Tim Vine.
Entertainment included performances from Zoe Oputah, winner of Fame Academy Bermondsey 2008 and Daniel Arieleno aka Lah-Lah Kid, winner of the 2008 UK Unsigned competition. Previous competition winners have included Leona Lewis.
