Southwark launches scheme to make residents safer in their homes A scheme to improve home security measures for the over 60s in East Dulwich was launched by Southwark Council this month.
The Southwark Safer Homes scheme is open to homeowners and private tenants who are over 60 or disabled. The scheme offers residents the chance to make their homes safer by installing window locks, repairing vulnerable windows, installing security lighting, improving front door security and repairing vulnerable fences or boundary walls. Also available is the installation of memo minder infrared device, which acts as a reminder to residents to keep the chain on the door before answering or to ask for identity cards.
If residents would like to take part in this scheme, all they have to do is contact Southwark Council who will survey the property, make recommendations and organise for a contractor to carry out the work. Then before work is started, the resident has to apply to the council for grant money to cover the cost.
Councillor Paul Noblet, Southwark Council's executive member for regeneration said: "This is an excellent scheme that will improve security for some of our most vulnerable residents in East Dulwich. I'd encourage people who qualify under this scheme and their families to get in contact with us soon, so we can start fitting the measures in their homes."
