Activities for families and children

As well as breakfast clubs and parent and toddler groups, there are activities such as a ‘baby gym’, football training, music and movement classes and toy library sessions available for families and their children to enjoy and learn from.

The activities are invaluable to residents, as Veronica Kigumdu of Camberwell, a mother of two girls under six, explained: “Being a stay-at-home mum can be depressing and stressful if there is nothing to do during the day. One day whilst I was I was at home with my girls it seemed the clock was not even ticking. Out of boredom, I looked through the What’s On guide to weekly activities that my health visitor had given me and saw that there was a new parents’ group running at Camberwell Leisure Centre and decided to give it a try.

“The atmosphere at the group was very good. I talked to other mothers about my child’s colic pain and sleepless nights. From then on I went to most of the weekly activities and my children gained a lot from them. In particular, my daughter Vida-Joda was very shy and the playgroups helped boost her confidence and prepare her for nursery.

“The Tiny Gym and Parent and Toddler group helped me overcome this challenge. Taking my children to the play sessions became routine and I noticed that the more active they were during the day, the better they slept."

Southwark's children’s centres

Moving the Sure Start local programme activities to children’s centres has also been a boost. The centres are specifically designed to meet the various requirements of the six and under age group and provide opportunities for all children to engage with early learning experiences. Parents can easily access stay and play sessions, family support and health advice.
