Environmental Business AwardsChanges to Southwark Council’s Environmental Business Awards will encourage local businesses to make greater savings for the environment - and for themselves.
The awards programme is being widened to support and recognise businesses cutting their carbon footprint through energy and water efficiency, and green travel. This expands on the awards programme in place until now, which focused on waste and recycling measures.
Businesses who make these environmental savings will be recognised with gold, silver or bronze awards, depending on the green practices they put in place.
Southwark Council has studied examples from other boroughs and sought feedback from local businesses on the programme. The council is meeting with businesses today to outline available resources and support, and discuss how the programme will work in practice.
Southwark Council’s environment executive member, Councillor Jeff Hook, said:
‘We know the vast majority of Southwark businesses are small to medium sized, so we’ve gone to these businesses to ask what this awards programme needs to look like to work for them.
“Feedback tells us that cost, and lack of information and support, are the two main barriers for businesses wanting to put environmentally sustainable practices in place. The message we want to get across in response to these concerns is that being efficient with environmental resources translates to saving money.
“To provide support for businesses to make these changes, we’re using existing programmes rather than re-invent what’s already in place.
“The awards programme will help us meet local climate change targets, set out in Southwark’s Climate Change and Waste Minimisation Strategies. These in turn will deliver on national climate change indicators - so it’s a win-win situation,” he said.
