Abolition of Slavery Resources for SouthwarkHow was Southwark connected to the transatlantic slave trade?
To commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 2007 the Cuming Museum and the Southwark Local History Library have produced a timeline and walk to help you explore the borough's history.
The Bankside and Bermondsey walk features places with connections to the transatlantic slave trade and the early presence of Africans in Southwark. The timeline highlights some of Southwark's significant connections with the slave trade and its abolition in 1807. Download the walk (pdf 304kb) and timeline (pdf 573kb) here.
These resources were produced in collaboration with the Museum in Docklands and Renaissance London. Visit the Museum in Docklands to find out more about London's links to the transatlantic slave trade through a new online map. See the Museum in Docklands website for more details of their new London, Sugar and Slavery gallery.
