Southwark Council has a clear vision - to make the borough a high quality place for those who live, work or visit. 

We recognises the importance of design and the built environment, not just in terms of aesthetic improvement, but also as a principal driver for social and economic change.

From the landmark Tate Modern to Renzo Piano’s stunning London Bridge Tower, we have not been afraid to entice radical design south of the river.

The growing catalogue of well designed buildings and spaces in the borough stands in testimony to the effectiveness of Southwark’s planners in supporting new schemes.

Interesting new schemes that are due to be completed shortly or have recently been completed are

• The Millennium Bridge at Bankside completed in 2001. It is one of the most widely admired new sites of London
• The Palestra building at Blackfriars due to be completed mid 2006. This impressive 13 storey office development will be the first site that countless visitors to Southwark, using Southwark's Jubilee line station, will see
• Bankside 123 at Bankside which is now well under way. This development will replace a dismal 1950's building. It includes three new buildings containing more than 100 000 sqm of gross office space and 9300 sqm of retailing space
