The Rake's Progress

Life in the Elephant 1948 and 2005 View over Elephant and Castle

This photographic exhibition captured the Elephant and Castle in two remarkable periods of change. It ran at the Cuming Museum from October 18 to January 14 and then continued at the London College of Communications until February 17 2006.

A range of resources for teachers was produced in connection with the exhibition for  teaching history at key stage 2, including a variety of activity sheets and resources to download for use in the classroom. The activities have been designed to support history qualification and curriculum authority unit 9 and in particular sections such as

  • What was the blitz?
  • Why were children evacuated?
  • What was it like to be an evacuee?
  • How did the war affect children locally?

The activity sheets use photographs, maps and ephemera to explore aspects of the second world war and also support cross curricular learning.

The resources and worksheets can be used in a variety of ways and more details are given on the LITE online gallery.
