Adding to our records
Most of the records in the Local History Library have been inherited from bodies that pre date the current Southwark Council. But many are from private organisations and individuals.
If you have documents you feel might be of historical interest, please contact on 020 7525 2000 or at local.history.library@southwark.gov.uk. Documents are kept in fire protected strongrooms.
Each deposit from a private investor is unique, and is treated as such. Donors may negotiate their own conditions of access.
We prefer to acquire items as gifts but can make arrangements for a 'permanent loan'. This allows donors to withdraw their records, after giving reasonable notice, although this happens only very rarely. We reserve the right to copy the records and to make these copies available for private research.
The period of a long term loan is generally understood to be a minimum of 50 years. If a donor withdraws records permanently before the end of that period they may be required to contribute towards any storage, listing or conservation costs incurred. Where records are withdrawn to be sold, we require first refusal to purchase the collection.
