Family History ResearchAccess to the Southwark Local History Library is completely without charge, and information will always be given on sources held, but research must be undertaken in person.
The staff of the library may not undertake research on behalf of enquirers. Readers may approach one of the researchers listed below, who will undertake commissions for a fee. Any arrangement you might wish to make should be made directly with the researcher.
The fact that a researcher's details appear on this list is not a recommendation by the library. All researchers are completely independent of the library.
Please send a s.a.e when you write to a researcher.

Societies
Local family history societies
When beginning to research family history it is a good idea to join the area of the family history society you are interested in.
If you can't make the meetings, the journal or newsletter of most societies will contain a members' interests column where you can advertise the names you are interested, in. And perhaps find other people who have the same interests.
The family history society, FHS, for the London Borough of Southwark is the East Surrey FHS.
The Society holds a meeting in the Local Studies Library on the second Monday of alternate months, between 12 noon and 2pm. There is usually a speaker, and a chance to chat. The meetings are open to everyone, and it is a good way of finding out more about the society before joining.
The West Surrey and North West Kent Family History Societies cover neighbouring areas and many members' interests overlap.
