Black History Month 2008

Stall at Black History Month

The Launch

Exploring the theme: The journey - past, present, future,  Black History Month in Southwark has been an exciting, entertaining and educating mix of events. 

The launch event kicked off the programme and showcased performances from Khadijatou Doyneh, the Recycled Teenagers, Exodus Dance Companies, and Child of Zion.

Big Draw WorkshopThe were inspirational and historical talks from Kola Olutimehin and Steve Martin.  Workshops, stalls, exhibitions and much more.  A day enjoyed by everyone!

Throughout the month

A forty page programme packed with workshops, talks, walks, exhibitions, film, theatre, dance, music and much more, ran alongside the theme; The journey - past, present, future.  A number of organisations took part in celebrating Black History Month in Southwark, which created such an impressive and Poetry slam audiencediverse list of events.

Poetry Slam Finale

A Poetry Slam was held at Peckham library to mark the end of Black History Month 2008.  The standard of poetry on the night was high and the competition was fierce!

The evening started with music by Jo Jo Yates. Welcoming all to the event were hosts Sandra Agard and Jamal Msebele. 

Music performancePoetry slam competitors, Andre Cazeley Binh Dwong, Cathrine Brogan, Jason Harris, Kelechi Iwumene, Kungadred, Paul Lepper, Patrick Miller and Rohan Boothe all made their mark in the competition with some truly inspirational poetry to claim the Poetry Slam title.

Such was the quality of poetry and performance that we ended up with two slam winners; Kelechi Iwumene and Kungadred, pictured bottom right.
