Results 2004 Southwark Council will put up three blue plaques in 2004 to celebrate the people and places that have shaped the history of the borough and will have an impact on its future – and all three have been chosen by you, the people!
This year, we asked people to vote for their favourite Southwark personality or landmark from a list of ten that were shortlisted by a panel of judges.
You voted in your thousands in what turned out to be a very closely contested campaign. All the votes have now been counted and the three people / places to be honoured with a plaque this year are:
1. Tommy Steele 2. The Pioneer Centre 3. Time and Talents
Tommy Steele picked up 21 per cent of the vote, The Pioneer Centre 20 per cent and Time & Talents 19 per cent. Phyllis Pearsall and the Dulwich Picture Gallery only very narrowly missed out coming a very close fourth and fifth. However, as it's an annual campaign there's still every chance that they might be honoured with a plaque in the future.
The three plaques will be put up in the autumn in the most appropriate places – subject to permission from the owners of the buildings.
