The People's Plaques 2003
This summer, Southwark Council will put up 20 blue plaques to celebrate the people, places and events that shaped the history of the borough and will have an impact on its future – and you have chosen them!
We asked you to vote for your favourite Southwark personality, landmark or event from a list of 50 - and 10,468 of you did just that!
Your favourite Southwark icons, all of which will get one of the coveted People’s Plaques, are listed below.
Our campaign to get you to choose the 20 plaques was launched on December 5, 2002 when readers of Southwark News and visitors to our website were invited to nominate their top people, places and events.
Five judges looked at the nominations, drawing on their experience, specialist knowledge and judgement to select a shortlist of 50 people, places and events that are worthy of blue plaques.
As soon as voting started on January 6, people across the borough and from as far away as America and Austrailia launched campaigns to make sure their favourite icons earned enough votes for one of the coveted plaques.
Some of the nominations even received backing from celebrities. Click on Celebrity voters on the left hand navigation to find out whom Jonathan Ross, Jamie Oliver, Melvyn Bragg,Time Team's Tony Robinson, actor Simon Callow, designer Zandra Rhodes, Kiera Chaplin, Carol Vorderman, Germaine Greer or Zoe Wanamaker supported and why.
Remember - we'll be running a smaller scale scheme every year. If you have got a person, place or event that you'd like to nominate for a People's Plaque next time, go to the nominations form on the left and let us know. Find out about other Southwark icons in the inspiration section. |
