A happy crowd of children applaud and smile at the Globe TheatreSTEP Festival

Southwark Theatres Education Partnership (STEP) brings Southwark theatres together in a unique partnership to share resources and expertise, and work together in a coordinated way to increase opportunities for children and young people.

The STEP festival promotes and celebrates the range of existing work, and explores new opportunities for schools to engage with the arts. It is about making the invisible visible, highlighting the hidden education work that goes on behind the scenes and the impact that this can have on creative approaches to teaching and learning.

Mix IT

Mix IT was a music technology programme led by CM, formerly Community Music, that took place in Albion, Redriff and Rotherhithe Primary Schools and with Bacons CTC.

The aim of the programme was for young people to explore music composition through the use of music technology. Students learnt how to produce their own original creations through sampling music, recording and mixing tracks and burning CDs.

The training programme offered opportunities for continued professional development for teachers. The teachers could continue to use the software and lead activities with other classes in schools after the programme was completed.

North Southwark Education Zones, NSEAZ

With a focus on raising standards in schools, NSEAZ has developed successful projects. One project, an after school therapeutic drama club at Beormund School, resulted in children who were more focused on their studies.

All 750 children at Gloucester Primary School contributed to developing ideas on playground activity during this project. Working with a Swiss charity, the children designed a guidebook based on different types of play, and named the sculpture being built in their playground 'The Sunlight Cube'.
