Artist in Residence 2008 Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre 2008
Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre is Southwark's second artist in residence. Born in Uruguay, Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre now works and lives in London.
Focusing on the way people interact, Ana Laura's work is influenced by different cultures, public views, and how we live together, '...her work creates visible and unexpected connections between things, people and places'.
Ana Laura's work is created using a variety of mediums:
More recently for International Women's Week 2008, Ana Laura staged an event call the 'Night Salon'. The event invited only women, to a late night discussion forum, with art as the topic.
Night Salon: While the city sleeps Friday December 12 2008, 7.30pm
This is the last Night Salon and brings the series to a close.
Just as winter sets in bringing in its tow long hours of darkness, for the December edition of Night Salon we will hear stories of people who stay awake throughout the night. From workers doing night-shifts that keep the world ticking over while we sleep, to insomniacs and parents of new babies, the city at night is kept alive by all those who are denied the pleasures of a good night rest.
- Anna Turley (New Local Government Network - NLGN) will talk about the key findings of her current research on the impact of legislation on night-time economies. NLGN was founded in 1996 and is a not-for-profit making, independent think tank, seeking to transform public services, revitalise local political leadership and empower local communities.
- Ceri Buck will premier The Night Feed, an illustrated talk on feeding a baby through the night at 3 hourly intervals. Ceri is a poet, writer and artist. Her work deals with the conversations, relationships and informal ways of learning that take place in any given situation, which are often those accorded low status, undervalued or invisible in society.
- Jimmy Merris (The Sassoon Gallery) – Portrait of the young artist as a night time worker: Ana
Laura Lopez de la Torre in conversation with Jimmy about working for money and working for fun. Jimmy graduated in 2007 from the London College of Communication, and is currently one half of Pat and Trevor (with Joe Coppard) – the curatorial duo at the helm of The Sassoon Gallery on Peckham Rye Lane.
Night Salon is a regular season of events organised by Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre as part of the Studio Residency awarded by Acme Studios, the South London Gallery and Southwark Council.

The Border Patrol Solstice Ride Sunday December 21 2008, 6pm onwards
To celebrate the winter solstice, join a group of local cyclists on a ride following the political boundaries of Southwark Council, to travel the longest possible route in the borough, on the longest night of the year. It gets lighter from now on. En route we will explore almost every inch of Southwark's so varied 17 mile border starting at 6pm in Camberwell Green. Bring warm clothes, bike lights and drink or food to share at the end of the ride, when we will gather at the artist's studio for a post-ride film night.
The Solstice Ride is both a Southwark Cyclist social ride, and an artwork. It is part of Beating the Bounds, a series of live events exploring personal and social territories at night-time in Southwark, devised by Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre in collaboration with individuals and local organisations who have a particular interest or stake in the uses of public urban spaces. Previous events include the Neckinger River Walk with artist Amy Sharrocks, and a forthcoming series of night-time walks led by residents of the Tabard Estate in Borough.
Southwark Cyclists are a mixed group of people who believe that cycling as transport is undervalued, under used and under supported. They are regularly consulted on cycling issues such as design of the London Cycle Network, collision remedy schemes, location of cycle racks and making sure that cycling is well represented in Southwark's bids for money from central government. Southwark Cyclists campaign on all cycling issues in the borough, run events all year round - even on December 25, cycle socially, carry out research and usually manage to have fun in the process.
The event is free but booking is essential as there is a limited number of places. Please email southwarknights@gmail.com, info@southwarkcyclists.org.uk or telephone Ana Laura on 07817 654 468, Barry on 07905 889 005
