New initiative against doorstep criminals
Southwark trading standards have been working with local Metropolitan Police officers and safer neighbourhood teams to tackle doorstep crime by rogue traders.
These rogues often target older, more vulnerable members of our community and can be extremely intimidating. Often they will demand more money than the originally agreed price, disappearing once you’ve paid them without starting or finishing a job. Incidents involving elderly people losing thousands of pounds are not unusual.
We are committed to reducing this type of crime and two pilot No Cold Calling Control Zones have been set up. The pilot areas are on the Scovell Estate in Borough, and Courtmead Close in Dulwich SE24.
As part of the initiative warning signs have been installed and supporting material distributed. This is in the form of 'Safe as Houses Trading Standards Advice Packs' to empower residents.
The scheme also includes a Nominated Neighbour Scheme. If there is any doubt as to the validity of any caller that caller can be referred to a nominated neighbour.
If you are a victim of rogue traders or are interested in receiving a Safe Houses Trading Standards Advice pack please contact us.
