New Rules on Doorstep Selling From October 1 2008 new regulations for traders who enter into contracts with consumers at their home or workplace come into force.
The Regulations extend the law on cooling-off periods and cancellation rights for consumers. Contracts for over £35 that are made during solicited visits by traders are now covered, as well as those made following an unsolicited visit. Consumers have a minimum seven calendar day cooling off period and cancellation rights. Traders must clearly set out the cancellation rights in any written contract or provide them in writing if there is no written contract.
This changes will mean more consumers have the safety net of a good cooling off period. It will also help to tackle underhand tactics used by rogues who took advantage of loopholes in the old law.
We are preparing some simple guidance for business but in the meantime businesses and consumers can find further information at the BERR website.
