Shop Front LicenceCurrently Southwark Council does not issue a licence to businesses for the purpose of putting tables, chairs or other furniture on either the pavement or forecourt of their premises. However, this is due to change early in 2005 when the new Shop Front Licence is introduced across Southwark. This licence is intended to control the increasing amount of clutter that obstructs our pavements.
Once the new licence is introduced, any business in Southwark that wishes to place the following outside their premises will require a licence
- Advertising sign boards or 'A' boards
- Tables, chairs, benches etc.
- Shop goods or tables used to display shop goods
Permission for the new Shop Front Licence will be based on
- Width of the pavement
- Pedestrian traffic at this point
- Complaints from the public
- Size of furniture to be placed outside your premises
You will need to show
- Consideration for pedestrians
- That a wheelchair or buggy will be able to pass easily
Applying for a licence
When the licence is introduced an application form, information about fees and the application process will be available on this page. In the meantime, please contact the council if you want to place any furniture on the forecourt or pavement outside your premises.
