Washing FacilitiesProvision of Washing Facilities
Under The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, employers must provide proper washing facilities, depending on the type of work the business does, in easily accessible places. These facilities should be near toilets and any changing rooms, be clean and well lit, and have a supply of hot and cold water, soap, and either towels or hand dryers.
Men and women should have seperate facilities. Appropriate facilities must be provided for any disabled workers. The regulations set out the minimum number of washing stations that employers must provide. These are, for each sex:
- one for 1-5 employees
- two for 6-25 employees
- three for 26-50 employees
- four for 51-75 employees
- five for 76-100 employees
- and an additional one for every additional 25 employees.
Temporary work sites or places without running water and drainage facilities must provide water in containers and chemical toilets.
