Microwaves

Microwave ovens are safe and convenient to use for cooking food. However, as with any equipment for preparing food, they need to be used safely and hygienically.

1. The oven should be manufactured to B.S.5175 which should be stated on the oven or instructions provided with the oven.

2. Make sure you know the power output of the oven. The higher the power output, the shorter the cooking time needed.

3. Always cook food for the time specified in the recipe or on the product label. Remember if your oven has a lower output than that given in the recipe or on the product you will need extra time for cooking.

4. Stirring or rotating of foods during cooking is recommended whenever possible. Standing time may be required for some foods to allow the heat to reach all parts of the food. You must follow the manufacturer’s instructions fully.

5. Always remember that if the amount of food is increased, the cooking time must be increased proportionately, e.g. if one portion takes 6 minutes, two portions will take around 12 minutes.

6. As a basic rule, cover food with microwaveable cling film or a lid which should be pierced. This helps to trap steam and helps cooking. Breads and pastries do not need covering.

7. Never use metal of any kind in a microwave oven. This includes foils and dishes with metallic decoration. Using metal may cause damage to the internal components or even cause the door to shatter.

8. Clean the oven compartment regularly. Usually wiping with a damp cloth is sufficient. Never use an abrasive cloth or scrape the surface with a knife. No particles of food or other material must be left on the door seal.

9. The oven must be switched on unless it is loaded with an item. No object or material must be allowed to prevent the door closing properly onto the oven.
