A Fairtrade BoroughInternational trade flows have tripled in the last twenty years, but the benefits of this trade are unequally shared.
Fairtrade is about paying poor producers a fair price and helping them gain the business skills and knowledge to work their way out of poverty.
Fairtrade in Southwark
Southwark achieved Fairtrade status in June 2007.
In order to achieve Fairtrade status, Southwark had to demonstrate its commitment to Fairtrade by
- Formally signing up to support Fairtrade, and committing to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at all meetings, offices and canteens
- Having a range of Fairtrade products readily available in shops and served in local cafés and eateries
- Having Fairtrade products used by a number of local work places (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and community organisations (churches, schools etc)
- Putting in place a local Fairtrade steering group to continue the commitment to Fairtrade town status
- Encouraging support for the campaign from residents, workers and business within the borough
