Experiences of Southwark Works

Southwark Works has helped more than 400 people back into work since the programme began. Read some of their amazing stories.

David David outside Independent Newspaper offices

An organisation who specialise in helping people with learning difficulties obtain employment, arranged a four week placement for David at the Independent newspaper. The placement was successful, but then David again found himself at a loose end.

That's when Gail, a Southwark Works adviser got involved. Gail provided intensive job preparation, in terms of applying for other roles. With more confidence and Gail's support, David approached the Independent again and secured another placement. Once the placement was over, David kept in touch with the editor and when a job opportunity arose for a sports journalist, the editor invited David to interview. David felt more confident as a result of the preparation with Gail, looking over possible interview questions and responses he might need and was successful in getting his dream job. He urges unemployed people to follow their dream. "There's help out there, never mind your personal situation. You just need to go out and grab it."

Southwark Works! officeKasia

When Kasia joined Southwark Works she had left employment as a result of stress and developed further health problems, all of which contributed to a significant drop in her confidence level. She had not thought about education or training as she felt that it would be too expensive and that at 60 she was potentially too old.

The main form of support she has received from Southwark Works was to rebuild her confidence, a significant part of which was improving her ICT skills. As a result of the support, including assistance with compiling a CV and developing interview skills, Kasia was able to secure a position as an administrator within a government office, a role she greatly enjoys.

Kasia believes that Southwark Works' involvement played a key part in her securing employment with the assistance they provided, transport costs being a particular help. Kasia described herself as being a fairly private person who does not have a large social network and in this respect she felt that the one to one sessions with her adviser were extremely valuable in enabling a relationship to be built to a stage where she felt comfortable in expressing her concerns and discussing any work related problems.

BanksideEmma

At the time of joining Southwark Works Emma was unemployed, caring for her young daughter and in receipt of income support. She was going through a very difficult time and was struggling with a number of issues relating to finding and sustaining employment.

Since joining the programme, Emma has received a variety of support including

  • Assistance with CV's and covering letters
  • Help with filling out application forms
  • Coaching on interview techniques
  • Dummy interviews

Her adviser was also able to provide her with information about training programmes and gave her assistance in enrolling on a legal secretary diploma. She also received support in locating a child minder and obtaining financial assistance to cover the costs of this, while she undertook a work experience placement arranged for her as part of the programme.

Emma stated that one of the most significant differences that Southwark Works has made to her life is her increased feeling of self worth and confidence in her own abilities. The support and encouragement through Southwark Works has enabled her to broaden her horizons and become aware of the multiple options that exist in terms of training and employment. Since joining the programme, Emma has developed a much more positive attitude, and stated that before becoming involved with Southwark Works, she never would have believed it possible to do all that she has.

Emma is currently in the process of applying for an apprenticeship with Southwark Council and is also completing a diploma in order to qualify as a legal secretary.

Maria

Maria suffers from psychosis. She left work a couple of years ago, did not leave her home, lost touch with friends and became very withdrawn from society. Her self esteem and confidence diminished as a result of her illness.

Maria met a Southwark Works adviser and began building up her confidence through some coaching in employability and motivation. Maria also worked as a volunteer for Southwark Works, after securing paid employment.

Maria's confidence has greatly improved, especially with having a daily routine to help promote her overall well being. Maria has gotten back in touch with some old friends and feels able to build up her social life again.
